Sumy youth union „Matrix“ was founded in February 2002 by students of Sumy State Pedagogical University, and registered in July, 2002.

But as the working group of volunteers for executing the humanitarian projects it exists since December 2000. During 2001 this working group conducted on the territory of the Sumy area the researches on the following subjects:

  1. Urgent problems of local communities.
  2. Monitoring of the mass-media influence on local communities.
  3. People and authority (level of population trust to government)

Since October, 2001 the group of volunteers began the activity within the framework of the partner project (Fund “Blagovist”, Sumy Regional Committee of Youth Organizations, Employment Centre ) “Development of the pattern of new jobs creation on the basis of village councils” on the basis of the program “ Democratization and reforming of a local government and state administration ” of the International Renaissance Foundation . In the process of researching and analysis the working group developed new recommendations of possible creation of the new enterprises in villages of four Sumy area regions, according to them 40 new jobs were created.

Informational services for NGOs
Since April, 2002 “Matrix” has begun the spade-work for creation of resource center for NGOs of the area. Nowadays this organization is accumulating the information concerning possibilities of taking part in international and Ukrainian competitions and measures for NGOs. Since October 2002 “Martix” prepares and share through Internet and local branches special bulletin “Third sector” – digest of news for NGO (2-4 per month).

In August, 2002 “Matrix” has initiated and organized First Sumy city NGO conference. During the spade-work some points were developed: “ Regulations about the Social partnership Council and social project competition”, and “ Regulations about Sumy resource center”. These documents were affirmed by a conference and directed to the city council as a project of Sumy city Rada resolution. “Matrix” was defined as the basic organization of Resource Center.

All activity of “Matrix” is realized at the volunteer bases. It involves the local resources (from businesses) for conducting measures.
According to its ethic and independent policy, “Matrix” and Sumy Resource Center cannot involve financing from local or state government.

The spade- work is now being conducted as for fulfillment similar measures at regional centers of Sumy area. Now 3 new NGO`s (Charitable fund “Blagovist”, Agency of Regional Development and Bureau of Human Rights Defense) takes part in this open project.

During September – December 2002 “Matrix” realized new project “Information technologies for young activists”. 44 volunteers from Youth organizations studied the computer technologies to support Internet activity of Sumy NGO`s in future.

In December 2002 five members of organization were graduated the Course of project planning. Volunteers from this group will help Sumy region NGO`s to design their projects.

1-st NGO Forum

“Matrix” has initiated 1-st regional Forum of public organizations. Its personal prepaired the projects of Forum resolutions and provided fundraising campaign to pay all Forum expenses, executed complex of measures to prepare and hold this event. Forum established the leading role of Sumy Resource Center in the sphere of NGO development and main goals of its activity.Social partnership was proclaimed as a basic strategy of NGO development.
Forum expenses were paid by “Matrix” local fundraising group (manager – Julia Krupenia) and because of Counterpart International support.

First Forum results:
According to the Forum resolution, special NGO Committees (culture, youth, ecology and so on) was designed. The goals of these structures are a) to represent the NGO and community point of view in the process of preparation of local government resolution; b) to take part in the local social policy design.
On December the 19 1-st round table meeting was held. Representatives of Art Unions and local government discussed the ways of regional culture development and rights of art NGOs.

“Martix” have announced the competition of the NGO projects and began to design the network of NGO development.
Project anticipates that system of tranings wil be hold for winners. Their project will be supported by the way of editing according to the donors requirements and funraising help.

Projects require support

“Virtual Resource Center for Sumy region NGOs”

Project purpose: provide for the NGO free access to informational resources, create the IT tools of experience exchange, partnership arrangement, actual question dicussion in Internet.
Now project is supported by Technical center “Radiosystems”, which provides for the access to Internet.
According to the project plan a) two working places will equiped for NGO, that have not own computers; b) special web-resource wil be create. It will include local news, Sumy region NGO projects database and guide, publications and documents library, NGOs pages and successful stories, discussion forum, useful links.

Social partnership emplementation Program

Project purpose is the creation of tools of Sumy area NGOs influence on regional social policy by the way of providing:

  • NGO conferences
  • NGOs social projects competitions
  • Trainings for NGOs personel
  • Special course of social partnership for NGOs and local authorities
